Surviving Cancer Six Years Later
The birth of our daughter, Lily, was a joyous occasion. The first three months of
her life were so happy for our little family. My wife, Heather, and I had no idea
that our joy and happiness was about to be ripped from our lives when we sat in
her doctor’s office when Lily was only three months old. When the doctor informed
us that Heather had been diagnosed with mesothelioma, she began to cry. I wondered
how we were supposed to make it through this time in our lives.
Making it through was not easy on either of us, and even Heather has said that she
has no idea how difficult it was for me. I was so angry that I was reduced to
using profanity on a regular basis. Sometimes, it was my only form of
communication. I knew it was wrong. I knew I had to calm down and be more
optimistic for Heather and Lily. I knew that I had to be Heather’s rock. I had to
be strong for my wife, so I was strong. It was not an easy task, but I managed to
pull it off. It didn’t take me long to realize that I was desperately in need of
help. I began accepting other’s offers of help. Their help enabled me to get
through my insanely long to-do list. It was overwhelming having to work, make
travel arrangements, take care of Lily and Heather, and think about what was
happening to my wife, but I learned to prioritize and accept help whenever it came
in, and we managed.
When Heather had the first step of her treatment in Boston, Lily went to South
Dakota to stay with Heather’s parents. Immediately following the first treatment,
Heather flew to with her parents and Lily in South Dakota to recover. She had to
have time to recover enough to start her next round of mesothelioma treatment. She
was gone for two months, but I had to remain at home to continue to work and
support our family. I saw her and Lily only one time during that two-month time
frame. I drove 11 hours one Friday night to see them. There was a terrible
snowstorm that forced me to sleep in my car for a few hours with the hope that the
roads would be cleared by the time I woke up. I had to get back into my car on
Sunday after an all to short visit and make the 11-hour drive home so that I could
go back to work on Monday morning.
It was not an easy decision to separate my family this way for such a long period
of time. I missed my wife and daughter terribly, but I don’t regret the decision
we made. We are just lucky enough that we were able to make a decision that hard.
I knew that I could not take care of my wife and work at the same time, and the
tough choice that we made was undoubtedly the best one for our family.
I learned a lot during my wife’s battle with cancer. I learned that prioritizing
is a must. I learned that accepting help from others was a must. I learned that I
simply cannot do everything by myself all the time. Most importantly, I learned
never to second guess or regret any of the tough choices we had to make, and to
take comfort in the fact that we retained the ability to make choices at all. I
hope that my words can help even one other family facing cancer. Heather has been
healthy for more than six years now, and I hope those words will provide help for
anyone who needs it.

The perfect gentleman
During a good manners and etiquette class being held for young children, the
teacher says to her students:
"If you were courting a well educated young girl from a prominent family and
during a dinner for two you needed to go to the toilet, what would you say to
her?"
Mike replies: "Wait a minute, I'm going for a piss."
The teacher says: "That would be very rude and improper on your part."
Charlie replies: "I'm sorry I need to go to the toilet, I'll be back in a minute."
The teacher says: "That's much better but to mention the word ''toilet'' during a
meal, is unpleasant."
And Little Johnny says: "My dear, please excuse me for a moment. I have to go
shake hands with a personal friend, whom, I hope to be able to introduce to you
after dinner. "

Crushed Scrotum
During the service, the pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to
express praise for prayers, which had been answered.
A lady stood up and came forward.
She said, "I have a reason to thank the Lord."
"Two months ago, my husband, Jim, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was
completely crushed."
"The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn't know if they could help him."
You could hear an audible gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagined
the pain that poor Jim experienced.
She continued, "Jim was unable to hold me or the children and every move caused
him terrible pain."
"We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation."
"They were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Jim's scrotum and wrap
wire around it to hold it in place."
Again, the men in the Congregation squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the
horrible surgery performed on Jim.
She continued, "Now, Jim is out of the hospital and the doctors say, with time,
his scrotum should recover completely."
All the men sighed with relief.
The pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had anything to say.
A man rose and walked slowly to the podium.
He said, "I'm Jim and I would like to tell my beautiful blonde wife, the word is
"sternum."
